Multi Stream Conference

Follow your own agenda with a choice of 3 streams over the 3 days:

The plenary sessions will cover topics like urban sprawl, investments on going vertical with mixed used concepts and integrating vertical structures in a city whereby transportation and infrastructure considerations will be addressed. Vertical cities minimise urban sprawl and indicate new directions to urban growth population problems in rapidly urbanizing cities with growing populations.

Day 1 & Day 2

Stream I  : Masterplanning and Typology

This stream will cover the need for efficient designs in vertical structures, placemaking and masterplanning of the city on a whole. This stream will also be looking at the typologies used for mixed used high rise structures, how to optimise space used in a building as well as on how to incorporate a sense of functionality while consolidating old and new blueprints.

Vertical cities’ typology is another crucial aspect. It is essential to understand the concept of investing in mixed used structures that are becoming mega structures (a city within a city). It has to be acknowledged that instead of investing in cities that cover more and more surface area, it will be more realistic to build huge skyscrapers with all the services of a “classical city” whereby residential, commercial, shopping and entertainment and transportation systems are integrated in one.

Stream II  : Structural Engineering and Design

This stream will look at the engineering and design aspects of vertical structures such as resistance against natural disasters, wind and fire. Issues on performance based design and piling and foundation techniques when building super tall will be address as well.

There is a need to understand that various renewable energies such as solar, wind, etc can be exploited when building a vertical city to reduce its energy dependence on non – renewable sources. As for the structural design and engineering part of these vertical cities, modular design is another aspect that needs to be looked into whilst building vertically.

Stream III : Sustainability and Revitalising

This stream will look at retrofitting of buildings and revitalising vertical cities whereby issues such as green issues and sky gardens will be incorporated into the streams. Retrofitting and relifing of existing buildings is a big focus for buildings these days with a lot of upcoming regulations. This stream will cover energy efficiency when retro fitting using retro – commissioning concepts. There is a need for every city to revitalise their cities to accommodate rapid urbanisation.

As more and more developments are coming up, governments are looking into the preservation of traditional architecture and historical relics. It is a must to balance the ecological cities symbiosis with the natural environment, whilst at the same time providing cleaner air, preventing heat effect, climate change and preserving green to revitalise highly urbanized cities with numerous vertical structures.

Day 3   GreenBuild: Towards Eco Sustainability

With rapid construction going on in major cities, this 3rd day is to compliment the streams in the first 2 day. High rise structures in the past are considered not sustainable; however experts are now focusing on making high rise buildings more sustainable through the incorporation of innovative & sustainable technologies and material. The streams therefore focus on achieving sustainability with smart technologies. Issues such as green and sustainable materials are also addressed.

Stream I  : Innovative Technologies

This stream will be looking at design & technologies for new build and refurbishments projects of high rise structures.

Stream II : Smart & Sustainable Materials

This stream will address renewable and high performance materials used in sustainable buildings for enhanced strength, durability, resistance and for greater efficieny of design and construction.
